Russia is interested in supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Morocco, prime minister Dimitry Medvedev said during a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Saad Eddine El Otmani El Othmani.
During a joint press conference on Wednesday, Medvedev said, “there are good prospects for supplying liquefied natural gas to Morocco.”
However, this is not the only area of cooperation. During Medvedev’s visit, the parties discussed prospects to strengthen cooperation in natural gas, electricity, energy efficiency, and hydrocarbons, a statement by the Russian government shows.
Russian Minister of Energy Alexander Novak said during his September visit to the country that the cooperation with Morocco is not limited to LNG supplies only.
“We are interested in building a regasification terminal, transport infrastructure as well as a gas-fired power plant,” Novak said.
Under its LNG national development plan, approved in 2014, Morocco is looking to build an LNG import terminal at Jorf Lasfar.
A high-pressure gas pipeline will be built to connect the LNG terminal to the existing Maghreb-Europe high-pressure gas pipeline. Regasified LNG will be fed to combined cycle power plants capable of producing 2400 MW of electricity.
The project cost is estimated at $4.6 billion and would enable Morocco to start importing up to 7 billion cubic meters of gas by 2025.
