Port of Gothenburg on Friday said it has completed the first LNG bunkering of a vessel while it was loading in the port.
Earlier in the month, the first ship-to-ship bunkering of LNG at the quayside took place in the port and in the interim, five ships bunkered whilst they were at anchor just outside the port, a statement reads.
The operations are being performed by the LNG-bunkering vessel Coralius with liquefied natural gas being supplied by Skangas.
Dan-Erik Andersson, Gothenburg Port Authority Operations Manager at the Energy Port, notes that seven LNG-bunkering operations in less than a month are considered a breakthrough.
The EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Directive states that it should be possible to bunker LNG at what are termed Sweden’s core ports (Luleå, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Copenhagen/Malmö and Trelleborg) before 2025, the port’s statement reads.
There are more bunkering options on the horizon, the Port of Gothenburg said, adding that Swedegas will build a landside pipeline for LNG at the Energy Port in Gothenburg, in the coming year.
The investment will also mark the starting point for the construction in stages of a larger facility that will supply both the transport sector and Swedish industry with liquefied gas.
