Malaysian energy giant Petronas received the first commercial liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo at its newly commissioned regasification terminal in Pengerang located in the southern Malaysian state of Johor.

The terminal called RGTP is Petronas Gas Berhad’s, which is a unit of Petronas, second regasification facility to start operation after its first terminal in Sungai Udang, Melaka.

The commercial LNG cargo was recently delivered to the import facility by MISC’s LNG vessel, the 152,000-cbm Seri Begawan.

Prior to this, the terminal in Pengerang has received three commissioning cargoes on September 1, September 23 and October 17, according to a Petronas Gas statement.

The facility will provide primary gas supply to the refinery and petrochemical plants, as well as Pengerang cogeneration plant in the Petronas’ Pengerang Integrated Complex, and to the peninsular gas utilisation system, to augment the availability of gas in the country, the statement said.

The terminal delivered the first gas to the system on September 15 while commercial operations started on November 1.

The import facility consists of an LNG regasification unit with a total capacity of 3.5 mtpa or 490 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd). It also includes two 200,000-cbm LNG storage tanks and a jetty able to receive up to 90 conventional-sized to Q-Max-type carriers per year.

The facility is operated by Pengerang LNG (Two) Sdn Bhd. Petronas Gas Berhad owns 65% share in Pengerang LNG (Two) Sdn Bhd, while the remaining shares are held by Dialog LNG Sdn Bhd (25%) and Permodalan Darul Takzim (10%).
