An ill crewman was evacuated from a bulk carrier which was sailing 3.5 nautical miles off the Port of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on November 15.
The crew member was suffering hypertension, according to a report issued by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).
Justin Erasmus, NSRI Port Elizabeth deputy station commander , said that “NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Toft, accompanied by an EC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic, and rendezvoused with the bulk carrier Evangelia Petrakis, sailing from Brazil to Indonesia.”
On arrival on the scene, the EMS rescue paramedic and 2 NSRI rescue swimmers were put aboard the ship where they medically evaluated the crewman.
The patient was stabilized and transferred, secured into a harness and using the ships gangplank, onto the sea rescue craft. He was brought into port and transported to hospital in a stable condition.
The 74,500 dwt ship, which flies the flag of Malta, has continued its voyage to Cigading, Indonesia, the bulker’s AIS data shows.
