Sustainable Marine Energy (SME) has assembled its PLAT-I floating tidal energy platform ahead of upcoming trials in Connel Sound in Scotland.

The platform has been fitted with four Schottel Hydro’s SIT250 tidal turbines, which are now undergoing commissioning before the beginning of the trials, according to the Edinburgh-based tidal energy developer SME.

Each turbine mounted on the platform is rated at 70kW, bringing the total rated output of the PLAT-I to 280kW.

The floating tidal energy platform has been designed as a trimaran, and is 32 meters long, with a beam of 27 meters.

The PLAT-I will be deployed in the Philippines after the conclusion of trials in Scotland.

The platform has been designed for more sheltered and slightly more benign sites in terms of wave climate.
