Transport Canada has issued three more CAD 6,000 penalties to vessels for alleged non-compliance with a temporary mandatory ship slow down introduced by the government to prevent whale deaths.
Transport Canada has fined multipurpose vessels Azoresborg and Jacqueline C, and the bulker New Shanghai.
Shipowners have 30 days to pay the penalty or to ask the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada to review the facts of the violation or the amount of the penalty, Transport Canada said in a statement.
In August this year, the country’s government implemented a temporary mandatory slowdown of vessels 20 meters or more to a maximum of 10 knots due to the increased presence of whales in the western Gulf of St. Lawrence, between the Quebec north shore and just north of Prince Edward Island.
In September, Transport Canada issued penalties for violating speed limit to vessels including Seven Seas Navigator, Petalon , Sir William Alexander and Pearl Mist.
Earlier this month, vessels PTI Rhine and Nomadic Milde were also fined.
