HSM Offshore has contracted Joulz Energy Solutions as subcontractor for TenneT’s 700MW Borssele Beta to be built offshore at Borssele in the south-west of the Netherlands.

Prior to this contract, HSM Offshore awarded Joulz as subcontractor for Borssele Alpha.

Jan Willem Kijlstra , Sales Director at Joulz, said: “We’re very pleased to be involved in the offshore substations for Borssele Alpha, and now Borssele Beta too. It confirms that Joulz Energy Solutions has valuable expertise in high-voltage technology that also covers the market for offshore wind energy. The collaboration within the Borssele Alpha project is running very smoothly. We look forward to expanding this collaboration to a similarly exciting and sustainable project.”

According to Kerem Kaplan, Senior Account Manager at Joulz, the company’s contribution to Borssele Beta will be identical to the work on Borssele Alpha, where Joulz reached the phase of the final design.

“In both projects, Joulz is responsible for the systems integration of all high-voltage (HV) components in the transformer substation, as well as the design of secondary installations and integrating HV SCADA, including testing and installing it. Our duties also include the supply and installation of control and security panels, designed by us, and the 66kV cable on the OHVS. The onshore commissioning is a shared responsibility between HSM and Iv-Oil & Gas (Iv), another subcontractor working for HSM,” Kaplan said.

In February, TenneT awarded HSM Offshore with a contract for the construction of offshore transformer stations required to link up the wind farms to be built offshore at Borssele.

Shortly after, the two companies cut the first steel for the Borssele Alpha offshore transformer station and signed a contract for the construction of the Borssele Beta platform.

The 700MW Borssele Alpha and Beta platforms are the first large-scale grid connections to be constructed under the National Energy Agreement for offshore wind farms in the Netherlands.

The Borssele Alpha platform is scheduled for completion in 2019, while the Borssele Beta platform is expected to be completed by 2020.

TenneT has been officially designated as the offshore grid operator in the Netherlands, and will contribute to fulfillment of the National Energy Agreement by developing offshore grid connections with a total capacity of at least 3,500MW during the period until 2023.
