Germany has taken another step forward in promoting the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel.
The country’s Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure announced earlier this year a new stimulus programme under which Germany would subsidize the conversion and newbuild construction of ocean-going vessels to LNG as fuel.
The ministry issued a statement on Wednesday saying that German companies looking to switch to LNG as fuel can now submit their applications online.
The main aim of the BMVI funding program is to promote the use of “clean-burning” LNG within the German maritime shipping industry.
The funding is provided under the Mobility and Fuels Strategy as Germany aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2020 and up to 95 percent in 2050.
Under the program, around 278 million euros will be in total granted to companies willing to switch to the chilled fuel by 2020.
Depending on the size of their project, companies could receive funding of up to 60 percent of the total costs of the project, according to the ministry.
The applications can be submitted by February 28, 2018.
