Dutch maker of cryogenic equipment, Cryonorm signed contracts with Damen Shiprepair Dunkirk to supply its liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel system for the 117m-long, 8500-cbm trailing suction hopper dredger Samuel de Champlain.

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, part of the Dutch shipbuilding giant Damen, announced last week it will undertake the conversion of the French dredger to dual-fuel capability combining LNG and marine gas oil (MGO).

Damen claims this would be the first conversion of a dredger to LNG as fuel.

Cryonorm said in a statement on Monday it will engineer, produce and supply the LNG fuel system to be installed on the Samuel de Champlain.

The contract includes pre-fabricated dual 170-cbm LNG tank system holding all required gas handling equipment, port and starboard side bunker stations and the control system.

The conversion operation itself will last three and a half months, from September 2018 onwards in Dunkirk, one of Damen’s French shipyards, Cryonorm said.
