A 27-year-old mariner who fell ill while working aboard the bulk carrier Snowy was medevaced some 122 miles southwest of Adak, Alaska, on December 23, the US Coast Guard (USCG) said.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard 17th District received notification from the crew of the 63,500 dwt vessel that the mariner suffered from symptoms of appendicitis.
The Jayhawk crew hoisted the man and transferred him to a LifeMed aircrew in Adak.
A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak HC-130 Hercules airplane crew was directed to transport a relief Jayhawk crew and to provide coverage.
“Having the Jayhawk and Hercules crews work in tandem is essential for long-range medevac cases,” Petty Officer 1st Class Brent Flanick, a Coast Guard 17th District watchstander, said.
The Liberia-flagged ship Snowy continued its voyage to Panama where it is scheduled to arrive on January 12, according to the vessel’s latest AIS data.
