Vattenfall has published a video showing indicative 3D visualisations of key offshore and onshore features of its Thanet Extension offshore wind farm project to be situated offshore Kent, UK.

In January 2017, Vattenfall revealed early plans to extend the existing 100-turbine Thanet offshore wind farm with up to 34 additional wind turbines, potentially doubling the output of the existing wind farm with more powerful machines.

An independent survey including 748 residents was conducted in May by Lake Market Research, which showed that 60% of the respondents said that Thanet Extension was a good idea, 29% stated they were not sure, while the remaining 11% claimed it was not a good idea.

If consented by the UK Government, Thanet Extension will extend the existing 300MW offshore wind farm, and will produce more power with fewer turbines than the seven-year-old project which was at the time of its inauguration the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Vattenfall said.

The Swedish energy company is looking to deploy 34 wind turbines up to 250 metres tall in order to maximise the generation of clean, green electricity for the project, and although turbines that tall are not yet commercially available, the company believes that rapid technological development will deliver in time for deployment in the early 2020s.

Vattenfall plans to submit an application for Development Consent Order in early 2018, and expects to receive Secretary of State’s decision on the application in mid-2019.
