Elengy, a unit of the French energy company and LNG player Engie, on Friday said it has performed its first transshipment of liquefied natural gas from an ice-class LNG carrier into a conventional carrier.

The company said that the operation was carried out in cooperation with the Nantes Saint Nazaire Harbor on January 10 at the Montoir-de-Bretagne LNG terminal, where the volumes onboard the 170,000-cbm capacity Fedro Litke Arctic carrier were transferred to the LNG Jurojin carrier capable of transporting 155,000 cubic meters of the chilled fuel.

The capacity of the latter is sufficient to cover the annual demand of a city like Nantes, Elengy said in its statement.

The LNG was transferred through the cryogenic pipelines linking directly the two berths, without going through the terminal’s tanks. The LNG cargo has then left for another destination, allowing the ice-class LNG carrier to return quickly at the LNG production plant in Yamal, Siberia, Elengy said.

In order to accommodate durably calls of ice-class LNG carriers, Elengy had to make numerous improvements on its facilities, such as, renovation of the berths, and the installation of compressors for LNG boil-off recovery.
