Taiwan is set to start importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States soon under a long-term deal, according to the country’s minister for economic affairs Shen Jong-chin.
Liquefied natural gas deliveries, expected to start this year, would balance the trade surplus, the US political journalism company cites Shen as saying.
Taiwan’s state-led energy company CPC Corporation signed a deal with GDF Suez (now Engie) in March 2014 for the delivery of 800,000 tons from the Cameron LNG project in the United States starting in 2018 with a 20-year term.
Taiwan has already received a cargo from the United States , loaded at Cheniere’s Sabine Pass LNG facility in Louisiana. The cargo was delivered to the Taichung LNG terminal located in in the port of Taichung in central Taiwan in June last year.
