Southern China’s Guangdong Province is planning to begin construction of more than ten offshore wind farms this year, Xinhua News Agency reported the province’s governor Ma Xingrui as saying.

While reporting on the work of the provincial government, Xingrui said that the projects to be started this year have an overall capacity of 3.65GW.

The plans to build the new offshore wind farms represent Guangdong’s efforts to boost the growth of renewables in the province’s coastal regions, Xingrui said.

Guangdong’s development and reform commission reported that the province plans to commence the construction of 12GW of offshore wind by the end of 2020.

In December, China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) and the government of the city of Jieyang signed an agreement to develop a 3GW wind farm off Guangdong, which will be built at two deep-water sites.

The project is valued at CNY 100 billion (EUR 12.8 billion), with an initial investment of CNY 5 billion.
