Following an incident which led to a deputy sheriff’s death at the Port of Ngqura, SAMSA has prohibited nighttime operations involving the transfer of personnel/crew between vessels in Algoa Bay and its surroundings.
The decision is effective immediately, GAC informed.
On January 27, Henry Kemp, the late warrant officer, boarded a pilot boat at the Port of Ngqura to deliver the warrant of arrest for the 32,957 gross ton bulker Blue Marin I.
He plunged from at least eight meters into the ocean while climbing a steep ladder to deliver the document to the master of the ship, the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) earlier said.
Although Kemp, who worked as a sheriff for twenty years, was soon recovered from the water, he was declared deceased.
