Following negative attention in the media and from local communities, Chinese investors decided to cancel their plans for a development of a deep-water container port in Brofjorden, Western Sweden.
The Lyskel municipality was contacted last fall from consultants representing the Chinese company China Communications Construction Group (CCCC) to examine the interest and potential prospects for developing a container port in Brofjorden.
The container port would have been the largest in the Nordic countries and was planned as part of China’s One Belt, One Road initiative.
The municipal authorities presented the investors with a number of queries concerning the development of the project, and the company was scheduled to return with the replies in early February.
However, the project did not fare well with the local community and has attracted negative attention from the media amid environmental and security concerns resulting from the project.
Hence, the Chinese dropped their interest in the project, the municipality informed.
The Port of Brofjorden consists of five product jetties and one crude oil jetty. The port is operated by the refinery Preemraff.
