A tug has arrived at the location of the stricken MOL Prestige boxship and has started towing the vessel, the owners of the vessel reported.

The vessel was disabled on February 1 after an engine fire and was drifting some 207 nautical miles south-west of Haida Gwaii, British Columbia.

Three mariners were airlifted for medical treatment due to the injuries sustained in the fire.

The engine room fire has been extinguished since, and the extent of damage caused by the incident is still being assessed.

“Subject to weather conditions, we anticipate the MOL Prestige to arrive at a North American port, still to be determined, in the morning of February 10,” the update reads.

World Maritime News understands that a tug Denise Foss took MOL Prestige under tow on February 3, destined for Constance Bank anchorage. The information is yet to be confirmed to WMN.

MOL Prestige departed the Port of Vancouver on January 29, 2018 destined for the Port of Tokyo.
