The government of Nova Scotia has welcomed federal government’s investment in the creation of ocean business supercluster that will be based in Atlantic Canada region.

The Premier of Nova Scotia, Stephen McNeil, congratulated the group of private sector partners and post-secondary institutions from the Atlantic provinces on their successful proposal to advance the region’s oceans sector.

Namely, the government of Canada announced last week that the oceans initiative is one of five economic sectors across the country that will share up to C$950 million ($757 million) over the next five years.

One of five superclusters to be established across Canada is so-called Ocean Supercluster that will be based in Atlantic Canada region and will seek to use innovation to improve competitiveness in the country’s ocean-based industries, including fisheries, oil and gas, and clean energy.

McNeil said: “In the Atlantic region, our connection to the ocean has shaped our way of life, and it continues to support traditional industries and foster innovation and globally competitive business.

“This announcement reflects our leadership position in many areas, and I am excited about what is yet to come in research, science and technology and new and diverse business opportunities. It’s an incredible opportunity for our economy and our people.

“I’d also like to acknowledge the federal government for making this historic investment in our region.”

The exact funding amount for either of five business superclusters has not been revealed.
