The Government of Western Australia has announced more than $1.6 million in funding is available for strategic coastal planning and management along with projects that improve coastal conditions.

Coastal Adaptation and Protection (CAP) and Coastal Management Plan Assistance Program (CMPAP) grants aim to support the planning and sustainable management of coastal areas vulnerable to risks such as erosion and inundation.

According to the government, suitable projects could include undertaking coastal hazard risk management and adaptation plans, monitoring, asset management, and maintenance. Coastwest grants support projects that enhance coastal conditions and amenity such as weed management, shoreline monitoring, and dune restoration.

Transport and Planning Minister, Rita Saffioti, said: “ The State Government works closely with local coastal managers and community groups to identify regionally specific issues and find ways to adapt to the challenges. By better understanding coastal hazards, local managers can make informed decisions that support sustainable development, tourism and recreation .”

The CAP grants are administered by the Department of Transport and the CMPAP and Coastwest grants are administered by the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage. They support the Western Australian Planning Commission’s State Coastal Planning Policy which guides land use and development along WA’s coast.
