The extent of the damage to the southern lock-gate at Kiel-Holtenau is worse than originally anticipated following the allision on February 19, GAC said citing authorities and appointed surveyors.
The 1,008 TEU boxship Akacia rammed into the gate resulting in huge damages.
The underwater section of the gate has been damaged as well compromising the stability of the lock. In addition, sixteen ballast tanks built into the gate are completely destroyed, according to WSA Kiel-Holtenau.
Repairs have started and several salvage companies have been asked for advice. However, final repairs will likely be delayed for weeks.
As informed, the lock remains closed and only one big lock chamber is currently in operation at Kiel-Holtenau.
On February 21, the containership was moved from the site with the help of two tugs and brought to Kiel’s Nordhafen.
