Corvus Energy has been hired by Seacor Marine and Rolls-Royce to provide lithium ion-based energy storage systems (ESS) for three new platform supply vessels (PSVs) being fitted with hybrid power systems.

The brand-new PSVs were acquired by Seacosco, a recently formed joint venture between Seacor and China Cosco Shipping Group (Cosco), and will be retrofitted into hybrid vessels.

As with most hybrid PSVs, typical vessel operations will utilize the batteries to provide spinning reserve during critical vessel operations such as dynamic positioning, as well as to provide support for peak shaving, enabling the diesel engines to operate more efficiently, Corvus said.

Corvus says that battery power from the Orca ESS will help reduce the environmental footprint of the offshore operations, andreduce operational costs, including fuel and engine maintenance.

Gulf of Mexico fleet fully covered

The news comes just a day after Corvus said it had been selected to provide the lithium-ion-based energy storage systems for four Seacor Marine’s hybrid platform supply vessels (PSVs). These vessels are owned by Mexmar, Seacor Marine’s joint venture in Mexico.

With these latest project wins, the Corvus Orca ESS will be providing battery power to seven Seacor hybrid PSVs and 100% of the hybrid PSVs operating in the Gulf of Mexico, Corvus said.
