South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has won an order for an LNG carrier from an unidentified overseas owner.

The order for the 180,000 cbm LNG carrier is subject to agreement on the shipbuilding contract terms, which are scheduled to be agreed by March 9, 2018.

Under the terms of the arrangement, the shipowner has an option for an additional order which is yet to be approved by the company’s board.

Since the beginning of the year, SHI has won orders for eight containerships from Evergreen Marine Corp, one LNG carrier, and two tankers totaling 11 vessels worth USD 1.03 billion. The latest order, once finalized, would bring the ordering tally to 12 ships.

According to a spokesperson for the yard, “ growing demand for eco-friendly LNG would boost newbuilding market from this year.”

Last year, SHI won USD 3.3 billion worth LNG related newbuild orders including three LNG carriers, 2 LNG-FSRUs, and an FLNG.
