Danish Energinet and UK-based National Grid have awarded Intertek with a contract to provide unexploded ordnance (UXO) client representative services on the Viking Link interconnector project.

Intertek will be in charge of UXO risk mitigation activities, which include UXO survey, inspection of possibly buried targets (ROV and subsea excavation) and possibly the removal of verified UXO items.

The contract covers the period from March 2018 to June 2019.

The two parties developing the 1,400MW interconnector project issued the tender in November last year.

N-Sea Survey BV recently won a contract to provide UXO survey and inspection services for the Viking Link HVDC interconnector, which includes UXO marine surveys offshore Denmark and the UK, where intertidal and nearshore surveys will also be carried out.

The Viking Link will provide an electricity link between the British and Danish transmission systems, connecting at Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire and Revsing substation in southern Jutland, Denmark. It is approximately 760km long, with the marine section covering around 635km.

Energinet and the National Grid expect to make the Final Investment Decision for the project this year, with the link scheduled to be operational by 2022.
