Volvo Trucks said it has selected Calor’s facility at Donington Park Services for fueling of its new FM LNG truck.

The company said the first FM LNG vehicle in the United Kingdom is a gas-powered truck with a powertrain based on Volvo’s conventional diesel engine technology.

Speaking of the company’s efforts to intensify the development of its gas-powered trucks for heavy, regional and long-haul operations, Martin Tomlinson , head of product demonstration at Volvo Group Trucks, said, “LNG is the fuel that is best positioned to quickly become a competitive and globally available alternative to diesel.”

Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland head of product management, John Comer added the company is focused on expanding LNG infrastructure and filling points like the Calor site in Leicestershire to cover the potential increase in demand over the coming years.

Calor currently operates LNG fueling facilities in Donington, Lockerbie, Castleford in West Yorkshire, Lymm in Warrington, Grantham, Wolverhampton and Bristol.

According to Calor’s transport specialist Mark Gilks , the network is to be expanded to accommodate the rise in the number of LNG-fueled vehicles which, according to manufacturers like Volvo could amount to 20 percent of all HGVs sold by the early 2020s.
