Singapore-based owners are set to take delivery of 251 ships by the end of the year, the highest number of vessels on record yet.

The last record was set ten years ago when Singapore’s shipowners took over just above 200 newbuilding vessels.

“There will be some slipping in these planned orders as market weakness persists in the tanker and offshore segments, but even with this considered 2018 should be a bumper year,” VesselsValue said.

Out of the total of 251 vessels, tankers dominate the deliveries, with 78 ships, totaling in 3.4 million dwt.

Tankers are followed by offshore support vessels (OSV) with 75 units, bulkers (39 vessels) and offshore construction vessels (22 units). Small dry vessels and containerships are at the end of the list with nine units respectively, data from VesselsValue shows.

Over 80 companies account for these orders, which reflects the rich maritime ecosystem of Singapore.

Five companies with the largest number of deliveries this year are Yangzijiang Shipping, which will welcome 18 ships into its fleet this year, Ocean Tankers Pte with 11 small tankers, MK Marine with nine ships, PIL with eight containerships and Swissco with eight AHTSs.

On a global landscape, Singapore has secured the second spot in newbuilding deliveries, China being the top dog with 286 ships set to join its fleet this year.

Japan follows suit on the third spot with 217 ships, Greece in the fourth place with 159 vessel deliveries and Malaysia in the fifth place with around 128 ships to be delivered this year.
