Qatargas made its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo delivery to Bangladesh as part of a long-term sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with the Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla).

The 138,000 cubic meters commissioning cargo was loaded at Ras Laffan aboard the FSRU Excelerate Excellence before making the journey to Moheshkhali Island in Bangladesh.

The first commercial cargo will be delivered following the completion of commissioning and will mark the first long-term agreement to be delivered through ship-to-ship transfer in open water, Qatargas said in a statement on Wednesday.

Back in September 2017, Qatargas signed a long-term SPA to supply up to 2.5 million tons of LNG per annum to Petrobangla for 15 years.

The FSRU Excelerate Excellence, owned by the Texas-based floating LNG solutions provider Excelerate Energy has a 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMscf/d) regasification capacity.

According to the natural resources consultancy WoodMackenzie, Bangladesh’s demand for liquefied natural gas could hit 8 million tons per year by early next decade, while current demand is estimated at 5 mtpa.
