The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, is responsible for 1,300 miles of the state’s 1,800 miles of coastline, constructing and maintaining over 30% of the nation’s total shore protection projects.
As in previous years, the Corps have been very busy placing sand on shorelines across the state in preparation for the coming storm season.
Some of the latest projects include:
Launched in March, the Martin County shore protection project on Hutchinson Island is being realized through communication and collaboration of the County, the Jacksonville District and Great Lakes Dredge & Dock of Oak Brook, Illinois.
During the works, GLDD will place around 400,000 cubic yards of sand on four miles of eroded beach, widening the beach berm and raising the elevation of the beach.
