Swindon-based Sofia Offshore Wind Farm Limited has made an application to the UK Gas and Electricity Markets Authority for an electricity generation licence.

innogy SE is the owner of the consented Sofia offshore wind farm. The project is being developed 165km off the coast of the North East of England and will comprise up to 200 wind turbines.

The project has a National Grid connection agreement with the connection point at an existing National Grid substation located in Teesside.

In 2015, the then Forewind consortium obtained development consent orders (DCOs) from the Secretary of State for the four projects within the Round 3 Dogger Bank project development zone.

In August 2017, innogy, which was previously one of four Forewind partners, secured 100% ownership of Teesside B. The project has since been renamed Sofia offshore wind farm.

The Sofia offshore wind farm is currently progressing through the latter stages of development. Prior to commencing construction, a Final Investment Decision will need to be made which will require a successful outcome in a Contract for Difference (CfD) auction, innogy said.
