Western Australia’s minister Stephen Dawson ordered the state’s Environmental Protection Authority to look into the delay in burying carbon dioxide emissions at Chevron’s Gorgon LNG project.
One of the conditions the $54-billion project was approved on was the requirement to bury at least 80 percent of carbon dioxide released at the Gorgon LNG plant during the gas processing operations.
In his comments, cited by Reuters, minister Dawson stresses that a start date for the five-year rolling average period has to be defined.
He also ordered the EPA to look into the need for changing the conditions that the project was approved on, as well as to deliver any further recommendations.
Responding to minister’s comments Chevron said it is also looking for clarification of the existing condition for carbon capture, Reuters reports.
The company is focusing on the start-up of the carbon capture project that already faced issues in valve and pipeline equipment. Currently, the company expects to start up the carbon-capture project in the fourth quarter of 2018.
