South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has won a contract for three very large crude carriers (VLCCs) from Norwegian Hunter Group, the shipbuilder confirmed.
The contract between DSME and Hunter Tankers, part of Hunter Group, was signed in Monaco on May 15, 2018.
The deal is worth about USD 260 million, according to DSME.
The three VLCCs are options which are part of a large-scale contract awarded to DSME earlier this year. These options have now been exercised .
DSME said that additional orders are expected to be received in the future as the contract now includes three new options.
The 300,000 dwt tankers will feature a length of 336 meters and a width of 60 meters. Estimated delivery times for the ships are May 31, 2020, June 30, 2020, and August 31, 2020, Hunter said.
With a total of thirteen VLCCs in its orderbook, DSME has received the largest number of orders for large crude oil carriers this year, representing 52 percent of global orders in this segment.
Specifically, the shipbuilder has won a total of 22 vessel orders worth USD 2.61 billion so far in 2018. They include eight LNG carriers, thirteen VLCCs and one special purpose ship.
