Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) said that its newbuild liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Marvel Falcon has recently offered humanitarian assistance to four sailors requesting rescue.
The LNG carrier had been sailing on May 13 from the port of Balboa, Panama, to Cheniere’s Sabine Pass LNG terminal in the U.S. state of Louisiana when the small boat was spotted, according to a statement by NYK.
The rescued sailors had departed from Port Limon, Costa Rica, on May 7 to deliver fuel to another boat, but they experienced engine trouble on May 8 and had drifted at sea for the next few days, it said.
The four sailors were in good health, and on May 18 they disembarked from Marvel Falcon at Sabine Pass to be processed by relevant authorities, NYK added.
Worth mentioning, the 174,000-cbm Marvel Falcon was recently named at the Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje shipyard.
The vessel is under a long-term charter contract with Mitsui & Co.
It is equipped with an X-DF diesel engine able to operate on marine gas or boil-off gas.
