Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) has started offering liquefied natural gas bunkering services as the first vessel was successfully bunkered with LNG at the port.

The 4,500 dwt singledecker Iceland, which unloaded cement in Malmö, was provided with LNG via tanker lorries at the end of May.

The bunkering was made possible through cooperation between the LNG supplier SkanGas, the client company Cementa, and CMP.

“Iceland was provided with LNG via two tanker lorries on the quayside. The bunkering was undramatic, and it feels good for us now to be able to offer this possibility,” Emil Nordström, CMP’s Terminal Manager, commented.

LNG is becoming more common as more vessels use this fuel to meet emission requirements. It also means that CMP currently receives gas-powered vessels in several of its operations.

“We are now evaluating various solutions so that more types of vessels can bunker LNG with us. We might consider bunkering from ships, or we might invest in our own permanent LNG infrastructure in the future,” Nordström added.
