Poland’s state-owned gas company PGNiG is currently in preliminary talks with US companies to grab equity stakes in LNG export facilities.

This would pave the way to the company securing US LNG supplies, Piotr Naimski, the Polish government’s energy infrastructure adviser told the media, Platts reports.

He noted that the talks are in line with PGNiG’s strategy of diversifying its supply sources, and the company is also interested in partnering medium- or small-scale US shale gas producers.

The scale and the manner in which these resources will be delivered to Poland are acceptable to the company’s potential investors, Naimski said.

PGNiG is pushing to reduce its dependence on Russian piped natural gas. The company’s contract with Gazprom is expiring in 2022, and there are no plans on renewing it.

The company is also focusing on the development of the Baltic Pipe project connecting Polish, Danish and Norwegian gas networks which is proceeding on schedule and is set to start construction in 2020.
