Floating Wind JIP Issues Cable Designs Call

The Carbon Trust-led Floating Wind Joint Industry Partnership has issued a call for Expression of Interest (EoI) to participate in a competition to support the development of high-voltage dynamic cable designs for commercial floating wind projects.

The Carbon Trust-led Floating Wind Joint Industry Partnership has issued a call for Expression of Interest (EoI) to participate in a competition to support the development of high-voltage dynamic cable designs for commercial floating wind projects.

The EoI call is issued to support cable manufacturers to develop suitable 132kV and 220kV dynamic cable designs.

The Floating Wind JIP is investigating critical issues associated with large-scale floating offshore wind farms. One of the key challenges is the availability of submarine cables for commercial floating wind farms and a study to support the development of dynamic export cables is currently underway.

The project is being led by BPP Cables and commissioned by the Scottish Government and twelve industry partners – EnBW, ENGIE, Eolfi, E.ON, Equinor, Iberdrola, innogy, Kyuden Mirai, Ørsted, Shell, Vattenfall and Wpd Offshore.

As part of the study, the Carbon Trust is launching a competition this summer to support cable manufacturers to develop suitable 132kV and 220kV dynamic cable designs. The competition hopes to accelerate the development of the technology to ensure that high-voltage dynamic cables are available for the first commercial floating wind projects within the next 5-10 years.

The competition specifications will be issued during July 2018 and cable manufacturers are invited to indicate their interest to participate by 19 June.
