Japan’s LNG imports rise in May YoY

Japanese imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) rose 2.7 percent in May as compared to the same month a year ago, according to the provisional data released by Japan’s Ministry of Finance. Japanese imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) rose 2.7 percent in May as compared to the same month a year ago, according to the provisional data released by Japan’s Ministry of Finance.

Japan, the world’s top LNG buyer, imported 6.4 million tonnes of LNG last month. LNG imports rose in May following a year-on-year drop for two consecutive months.

On the other side, the country’s coal imports for power generation also rose by 15.3 percent to 8.8 million tonnes last month.

The value of May LNG imports was about $3.19 billion, a rise of 13.1 percent on year, the data shows.

Worth mentioning, the average price for spot LNG cargoes imported into Japan contracted in the month of May declined from the April figures.

The contract-based price was at $8.2 per mmBtu, a 9.9 percent derease compared to April. The arrival-based price was at $7.9 mmBtu.
