Nordic LNG producer and supplier Skangas bunkered Furetank’s newly built chemical tanker Fure Vinga with liquefied biogas (LBG) at the port of Gothenburg.
Liquefied biogas was delivered from Skangas’ parent company Gasum’s facility in Lidköping, the company said in a statement.
Fure Vinga was delivered from the shipyard in April this year and is one of two vessels in the Furetank’s fleet powered by liquefied gas.
Together with its partners, Furetank is building five additional dual-fuel vessels that can be powered by LBG when the fuel is available. The vessels will be trading in North Europe.
LNG and LBG mainly consist of methane gas, meaning the existing LNG supply infrastructure can be used without any modifications. This allows for the use of same trucks, ships, tanks and marine filling stations for both products.
Commenting on the operation, Tommy Mattila , sales and marketing director in Skangas, said this was the first supply of LBG to a marine customer.
LBG availability on the market in rising, and the company is planning to utilize the same infrastructure it has built throughout northern Europe, he concluded.
