The offshore substation topside for Ørsted’s Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm has been installed at the site in the German North Sea.

Heerema Marine Contractors was responsible for the transport and installation of the substation’s topside, jacket and piles, as part of a contract secured with Ørsted in 2016.

The Netherlands-based HSM Offshore is the EPC contractor for the substation, managing all the construction works at its yard in Schiedam.

The jacket foundation carrying the 2,500-ton topside was installed in July last year at the offshore site some 57km off the north-west coast of Germany.

Located next to the 312MW Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind farm, Borkum Riffgrund 2 will comprise 56 MHI Vestas 8MW turbines.

The offshore substation and the 450MW offshore wind farm are expected to be fully commissioned in 2019.
