Offshore drilling specialist Seadrill Partners has secured a contract with Shell for one of its drillships.

The West Capella drillship will work for Shell’s subsidiary Sabah Shell Petroleum Limited, drilling five wells offshore Malaysia.

Shell will also have several options to extend the contract.

Backlog for the firm portion of the contract is expected to be approximately $32 million and start is expected in October 2018.

The West Capella is a 6th generation ultra-deepwater drillship built by Samsung Heavy Industries in 2008. Its maximum water depth is 10,000 feet while the maximum drilling depth is around 37,500 feet.

The rig is currently being used by Repsol for and exploration well offshore Aruba.

Before the Repsol contract, Seadrill’s West Capella worked for the Malaysian oil and gas giant Petronas on a three-month contract from October 1, 2017, until December 31, 2017.
