All three offshore substations and the world’s first Reactive Compensation Substation (RCS) have been installed at Hornsea Project One, Ørsted, the owner and developer of the 1.2GW wind farm, said.
Denmark’s Bladt Industries delivered the first substation topside in April, with the final two topsides departing the manufacturer’s yard in Aalborg last week.
The four jacket foundations for the substations were manufactured and delivered by Spain’s Dragados Offshore.
The three offshore substations will collect the power generated by the wind farm’s 174 Siemens 7MW turbines, convert it to high voltage and send it to the National Grid via the RCS which is installed between the offshore wind farm and the shore.
The purpose of the RCS is to compensate for the reactive power generated in the wind farm power system.
Located some 120km offshore Yorkshire, UK, Hornsea Project One will become the largest wind farm in the world once fully operational in 2020.
