The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District, has just reported that the last load of sand has been pumped onto the Fenwick Island, Delaware.
According to the Corps, the dredge Dodge Island, owned by Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, completed dredging and beachfill operations on August 9, 2018.
The work included repairing the dune and berm system at Bethany Beach, South Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island, DE.
USACE reported that the overall project purpose was to pump approximately 659,000 cubic yards of beach fill in Bethany Beach, 500,000 cubic yards in South Bethany and 278,000 cubic yards in Fenwick Island. The project will reduce the risk of coastal storm damages to infrastructure by rebuilding the beaches and dune system in the area.
Last year, USACE’s Philadelphia District awarded similar contract to GLDD worth $19.2 million to dredge more than 1.4 million cubic yards of sand that was used to fortify these beaches.
