Japan power companies use less LNG in May

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) use by Japan’s power companies dropped by 0.5 percent in May when compared to the same month a year ago, the preliminary data from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry shows.

The power companies consumed 3.55 million tonnes of LNG in May as compared to 3.57 million tonnes recorded in the same month last year.

LNG purchases by the power companies in May were at 3.88 million tonnes, showing a decline of 3.2 percent on year, the data reads.

Total generation by the power companies reached 84.9 billion kWh in May. This compares to 74.6 billion kWh in May 2017.

The share of power generated from LNG declined 1.5 percent from the year ago to total 26.09 billion kWh or 39.7 percent of the total power generation share.

On the other side, power generation from nuclear, hydro and renewable energy showed a growth when compared to May 2017.
