Lavish Opening Ceremony Sets the Scene for SMM 2018

Maritime who’s who gathered last night at Hamburg’s City Hall to celebrate the opening of the biennial SMM trade fair.

Maritime who’s who gathered last night at Hamburg’s City Hall to celebrate the opening of the biennial SMM trade fair in Hamburg, Germany.

The fully packed city hall was addressed by Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Kitack Lim.

“I am sure that the exchange of ideas will contribute towards the main goal we all share – to shape the future of shipping,” Lim said in his speech.

IMO’s Secretary General touched upon the latest trends in the industry including the organization’s environmental intitiatives as well as challenges and risks arising from automation of shipping and digitization.

The official opening ceremony of the exhibition and conference program is set to take place this morning.

The fair, being held September 4 – 7, 2018 at the Hamburg Messe und Congress (HMC), is to gather 2,289 exhibitors and around 50,000 visitors from more than 124 countries over the four days.
