Algerian state energy firm Sonatrach has shortlisted four bidders for a contract to build a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) jetty at the company’s Skikda LNG export plant.
The Skikda LNG plant consists of four trains. The first three trains with a capacity of 3.2 million tonnes have been producing LNG for decades while the 4.5 million tonnes per year mega-train started chilling gas in 2013.
The new project which includes building the LNG jetty and expanding the loading capacity of Skikda port will “enable Skikda’s mega-train to increase production to its nominal capacity,” Sonatrach said in a statement on Tuesday.
It will also help boost Algeria’s ability to export to new customers and compete with increased competition from new LNG suppliers, the state-owned company said.
The new jetty will allow LNG carriers of up to 220,000-cbm to dock at the facility.
The contractors bidding for the expansion project include South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction, China Harbour Engineering, Egypt’s Orascom Construction Besix and a Turkish-Netherlands consortium of Ronesans and Ballast-Nedam, Sonatrach said.
Sonatrach plans to select a contractor by the end of September.
