Offshore driller Rowan Companies has won a drilling contract from French oil major Total for operations offshore Mexico.

Rowan said on Monday that its R-Class ultra-deepwater drillship Rowan Renaissance has been awarded a contract in Mexico with a firm term of one well with an estimated duration of 60 days. Operations are expected to start in early 2019.

The driller said that the agreement includes three one-well options that can be exercised by other Total affiliates.

The Rowan Renaissance is currently being reactivated from warm-stack offshore Louisiana.

Before going to the warm-stack mode, Rowan Renaissance drillship had worked for Spanish oil company Repsol but the deal was terminated earlier than expected, in November 2016.

The 2014-built UDW drillship is of a GustoMSC P10,000 design. It is capable of drilling wells to depths of 40,000 feet in waters of up to 12,000 feet.
