Panama-flagged containership MSC Katyayni sprung a fuel leak after hitting a pier while manouvering in the port of Gebze, Turkey on November 19.
Due to the impact, the ship breached its fuel tank on the portside, above waterline, Turkish daily Deniz Haber informed .
Based on the released footage from the incident, a containment boom has been placed around the vessel to curb the pollution to the environment.
There have been no reports of injuries. The 1996-built ship is listed as part of Zodiac Maritime’s fleet, and operated by MSC.
“The container ship MSC Katyayna allided with a pier while maneuvering under pilotage at the port of Gebze in Turkey, incurring minor hull damage and a small fuel leak. MSC took all appropriate action to remedy the situation, including coordinating with the harbour master and deballasting the remaining fuel to prevent any further discharge,” a spokesperson of MSC told World Maritime News.
The company said that the vessel is being repaired.
The cause of the incident is yet to be determined.
