Australian liquefied natural gas exports have surpassed those from Qatar for the first time during November.

According to the Reuters’ Refinitiv Eikon data, Australia exported 6.5 million tons of LNG during the month of November, compared to the 6.2 million tons Qatar exported during the same month.

Data shows that Australian LNG exports increased by over 15 percent compared to October. On the other hand, Qatar’s LNG exports dropped 3 percent.

The rise in Australian exports has been boosted by the start of deliveries from the Inpex-led Ichthys LNG project near Darwin.

It is expected that Australia will press on with its advantage as Shell’s Prelude FLNG project starts shipping cargoes. Shell expects to start production around the end of this year.

However, Qatar that is capable of producing 77 mtpa of LNG is moving forward with its plans to increase its production capacity to 110 mtpa, which will bring it back on top of the list as the world’s largest LNG exporters.
