Japanese shipbuilder Imabari Shipbuilding hosted a double naming ceremony for two new 14,000 TEU container vessels being built for Taiwan’s shipping firm Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp.
The two newbuilds were launched and named YM Wonderland and YM Wisdom respectively at a ceremony held on 21st December, 2018, at Imabari Saijo Shipyard.
YM Wonderland and YM Wisdom are the second and the third of five 14,000 TEU full-container vessels Yang Ming chartered from Shoei Kisen Kaisha . They are sister vessels of YM Wellbeing which was delivered to Yang Ming this October.
With a nominal capacity of 14,220 TEU, each ship has a length over all of 366.44 meters, a beam of 51.2 meters, summer draft of 15.524 meters, and can achieve a speed up to 23 knots.
YM Wonderland and YM Wisdom will be delivered to Yang Ming in February 2019 and deployed to THE Alliance Asia-Europe service.
“With the deployment, Yang Ming will become more competitive thanks to the wider network and more efficient delivery services,” the company said.
The Taiwanese shipping company has been very diligent this year with its fleet expansion efforts having ordered ten 2,800 TEU new container vessels and chartered in ten 11,000 TEU new-built vessels to boost its competitiveness.
The ten 2,800 TEU containerships were ordered from compatriot CSBC Corporation in August and are scheduled to start joining their owner in the second quarter of 2020.
Furthermore, the ten 11,000 TEU boxships are slated to start delivery in 2020 with the last ship from the batch scheduled to be completed in 2021.
