Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) has awarded Tai-Shing Engineering and Construction Company Ltd. with the lease rights for a site at the Port of Taichung, where the company will build a factory to produce transition pieces for offshore wind turbines.
TIPC announced the winner of the public tender for lease rights for around 12 Ha. at the Port of Taichung Industrial Zone II on 23 January. The port operator will now sign a leasing contract with Tai-Shing, which will start building the factory by the end of this year and complete it in 2021.
Tai-Shing, a specialist in fabrication and installation of products such as heat exchangers, condensers, and pressure vessels, will enter the offshore wind industry for the first time with its transition piece factory at the Port of Taichung.
The company will invest TWD 3.3 billion (approx. EUR 95 million) in the new factory, where 350 people will be working to produce around 60 transition pieces annually.
Taiwan is set to kick off its offshore wind sector after its Ministry of Economic Affairs had embarked on a power market transformation to phase out nuclear power and had set a target to add 25GW of renewable energy by 2025, including 5.5GW of offshore wind.
Last year, Taiwan awarded its offshore wind capacity to several developers in two separate tendering rounds in April and June . The developers are now preparing to build their projects in the next few years.
