A containership struck a gantry crane at GCT Vanterm container terminal at the Port of Vancouver, Canada.
The incident occurred at 1300 Stewart Street in the early morning hours (local time) of January 28, 2019.
As informed, the ship-to-shore crane collapsed onto some of the containers while the Panama-flagged vessel was berthing at the terminal.
The boxship has been identified as the 7,024 TEU Ever Summit, owned by Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine Corp. The Post-Panamax arrived at the Port of Vancouver from the Port of Ningbo, China, VesselsValue’s data shows.
There were no injuries as a result of the incident. However, both the 2007-built vessel and the crane sustained damage, according to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB).
“The vessel is currently being held alongside with tugs as the crane boom is on top of a container stack at the aft end,” GCT said in a statement.

“While we continue to assess the situation, an exclusion zone has been set up to ensure the safety of all those at the terminal and for any operational impacts,” GCT added.
“Following yesterday’s incident at GCT Vanterm, the port authority is providing incident support to the terminal operator GCT, as needed, to ensure that port operations are resumed in a safe and efficient manner. This includes having our harbour patrol vessels on-site to provide situational awareness and providing vessel traffic management in the vicinity of the terminal area,” the Vancouver Port Authority said in a separate statement.
The TSB has deployed a team of investigators to Vanterm Berth No.6 to gather more information and assess the accident.
