First Taichung Port Offshore Wind Wharf Open for Business

The Port of Taichung has completed renovation works on the first of the five wharves dedicated to offshore wind, the Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC), said.

Renovation work on Wharf No. 2 was completed at the beginning of the year and the wharf is now ready to support ongoing private contractor efforts to install wind turbines on the 120MW Formosa 1 Phase 2 offshore wind farm according to schedule, TIPC said.

The wind farm will feature 20 Siemens Gamesa 6MW turbines expected to be commissioned in 2020. Back in December 2017, Siemens Gamesa and TIPC signed a Memorandum of Understanding to look into the development of areas of the Taichung port for a potential manufacturing site for offshore wind components, office facilities, and staging areas including storage, pre-assembly, and quayside load-out.

Working to facilitate the national government’s goal of installing 5.5GW of offshore wind capacity by 2025, the Port of Taichung will renovate or construct new wharf and support facilities at Wharf Nos. 2, 5A, 5B, 36, and 106.

These wharves and facilities will be available for private firms to use in wind turbine production, storage, assembly, and transport.

The Port of Taichung has been identified as an optimal port to support offshore wind farm construction works in Taiwan.
